Bringing it all together
Based in Deeside, North Wales, our Head Office is the heart of the Iceland operation. Home to the Company's directors and senior management teams, it also accommodates 500 colleagues from all the key business functions - Finance, Retail Operations, Supply Chain, Marketing etc. Training programmes are available from leadership development, and systems training to advanced Microsoft Office skills.
Deeside is a great place to live and work, you can enjoy the rural charms of North Wales or the buzzing shops, cultural attractions and nightlife of Chester, with Liverpool and Manchester also in easy reach. Working at Head Office has plenty of perks too - including Costa, dry cleaning drop and collect service, staff shop and The Roxy, our amazing restaurant run by former top chef Mike Truelove, offering a mouth-watering a daily menu.

Today, even small companies are almost completely reliant on data and information systems, so just think how critical our IS function is to the Iceland operation? And this year will see a range of major IS projects rolling out - from NEXUS, a HR scheduling database for all employees, to Iceland's online shopping launch - plus a new email and internal comms facility planned for later this year. Part of the Iceland IS team's remit involves system security, anti-intruder practices and critical data protection.
Our Finance department makes a major contribution to business performance and is a key component of Iceland's expansion strategies. It supports the business in meeting its financial responsibilities and the team works closely with all the main internal departments in the operation. Other key responsibilities include the daily recording of all monetary transactions, treasury/HMRC management, overseeing financial risk, asset control, financial reporting and tax and regulatory matters.
Marketing champions consumer insights into the typical Iceland shopper - their buying habits, trends and future aspirations. Products, pricing and promotion are all key responsibilities for our marketers, and if you catch one of our regular TV commercials (particularly our Summer and Christmas bursts) you'll know the campaign was managed by Marketing. The team oversees the window promotions you see every day on the high street - advertising Iceland's ranges and special offers.
ITEX is our International Sales and Export Division. It is responsible for the supply of both own-label and branded products to franchise, retail and distribution partners across 30 countries around the world. Overseas markets include the Czech Republic, Iceland, Denmark, Germany, France, Austria, Portugal and Spain. Other International markets under development currently include the Far East and Russia. The main ITEX team is based at Deeside, with a European office located in Vienna.
Our Supply Chain team controls and manages the timely distribution of product and stock to all stores, which in turn maintains expected levels of sales and availability to customers. Thousands of individual products and ranges are supplied to stores each week, therefore the balancing of stock levels against possible waste is critical to supporting profitability. Working with external partners, Supply Chain also manages our warehouse and transport operation, including our own storage depot.
Central Services deals with the broad range of facilities management issues across the company. This can range from property management (buying/renting, selling, store refurbishment, refits etc), fleet operations, retail equipment, utility services and service contracts. The team also takes responsibility for catering operations and office cleaning at Head Office. With 800+ stores to maintain, a significant part of our responsibility encompasses engineering and architectural services management.
Retail Operations is central to Iceland's multi-billion pound commercial offering. Covering trading, productivity, business change, new stores and refits, the team's role is to provide our frontline operation with all the resources and support required to trade effectively. Retail Operations provide the very best support for our 800+ store teams who, in turn, offer the best customer service on the high street. The Retail Operations team is one of the largest based at our Deeside headquarters.
Legal manages five key back- office functions - insurance, licensing, Health & Safety, legal oversight and company secretarial. The team manages everything relating to legal affairs and corporate probity. This includes legal contracts, IP protection, trademark issues, licensing, employment tribunals and litigation. We are also responsible for accident prevention, ensuring Iceland is protected against loss such as slips and trips, traffic accidents, property and travel indemnity.
Buying is responsible for all-important Iceland price-product offer. This covers the extensive range of products we sell, including own-label and branded goods. Keeping in tune with consumer trends is a key role for the team. To ensure our products are delivered to store at the very best price, the team negotiates and purchases stock on the most favourable terms. By the same token, it works hard to maintain excellent supplier relationships - vital in ensuring quality, on-time delivery and fast response when required.
Our HR team looks after all personnel issues relating to our 25,000 workforce. One of our primary responsbilities is recruitment - ensuring every vacancy is filled by the best person for the job. HR is pivotal in the continuous support of staff development, up-skilling and training. The HR team is also tasked with guiding staff on the processes available for progression within the business. It deals with expectations of colleagues, specifically their working conditions, entitlements, benefits, payroll and pensions.
Recently established, our Delivered Sales team controls both the Home Delivery and Online operations currently in the trail stage. Iceland was the first major UK food retailer to offer free home delivery for store purchases back in 1996 - a service that's still unique today. Weekly, over 180,000 delivered sales are despatched to doorsteps across the UK. Our Delivered Sales team also manages Iceland's Home Delivery Centre of Excellence - a dedicated training facility based at our Deeside complex.
We operate four streams under our Contact Centre - Retail Customer Care, Switchboard, Retail Service and Sales Based Ordering (SBO). Our Retail Customer Care team manages consumer queries from store opening times to injuries in store. Contact is made via phone, email, letters and store forms. Our switchboard team directs calls to the correct department, while our Retail Service Desk is the first point of contact for stores. SBO deals with product availability.
