Early Careers

Power up your career with one of our graduate programs

About our graduate programmes

Iceland is now recognised as one of the most innovative food retailers in the UK, leading the way in product development and pioneering initiatives. We’ve won multiple awards for our products, service and the way we treat our people. Now, we’re ready to set your career on a fast track to the top with one of our bespoke Graduate programmes.

We think Britain deserves to know and that consumers deserve the choice. And it’s revolutionising our reputation in the market.

Buying

Unlike on schemes elsewhere, Iceland Graduate Buyers don’t start by shadowing someone. Join us and you’ll be front-and-centre in the department, managing your own small category from the offset.

You’ll be selecting ranges for our supermarkets, negotiating deals with suppliers and forecasting sales figures for the products that you choose, on a nationwide scale.

Of course, you’ll present your ideas to senior leaders, first, to get their buy-in. But the confidence you build in them, via your developing market knowledge, data analysis skills and commercial prowess, will propel you toward a brilliant career.

General Management

Big decisions aren’t just made by seasoned professionals. Here at Iceland, we put our faith in brilliant ideas from an early stage. And our General Management programme is all about developing your ability to analyse and influence strategy. Developing and implementing your own initiatives using your personal budget.

This is the inner sanctum of our business. You’ll work closely with a member of our Exec Board, learning what leadership looks like from the inside, right down to our stores.

You’ll be set exciting projects to work on, which will expose you to different departments across the business. Each one of them will offer you a different opportunity to make insightful, impactful decisions. Setting you on the pathway to a successful career in retail, project or operational management.

Retail

Our stores are the heart of our business – this is where our reputation is forged and maintained. So it's all about making our customers our number one priority. You'll immerse yourself in this exciting, fast-moving store culture and get to the beating heart of how we do business. It's the perfect platform from which to introduce new ideas as you'll see just what our customers love about what we do – as well as how we might be able to deliver even better service.

Why work for us?

We’re already one of the biggest names in UK food retail. But that doesn’t stop us from shooting for ever-greater goals.

That’s what makes this the perfect environment for someone as ambitious as you are. You want a company that will let you really make an impact from an early stage, but still support you. And that’s exactly who we are.

Our unparalleled training and development is designed to bring out the very best in you. At Iceland, we acknowledge that we can’t create talent, but we can certainly help to shape and nurture it.

That’s why we hear so many of our Graduates saying things like, ‘It’s what you make of it – if you want it, the chance is there to go out and get it.’ Actual quote. Isn’t that exactly the kind of atmosphere you’re looking for?

What it's like here

The culture here is one of our greatest assets. It’s that perfect balance of high professionalism and fun.

That’s because our Graduates are genuinely spurred on by the achievement they know lies ahead. In other words, it feels good to know you’re getting ahead fast and destined for a positive future.

But don't just take our word for it. See what some of our brilliant Graduates have already said about their Iceland experiences:

Recruitment Process

Put simply, your journey will begin with an online application. From here we'll shortlist based on the following criteria:

  • You'll either have, or be on track for, a 1st class or 2:1 Honours degree
  • You’ll have minimum of 250 UCAS points
  • Ideally, you’ll have also completed an Industrial Placement or relevant work experience under your belt

(In order to get the most out of the schemes, Graduates will ideally have a full UK driving licence. Normal eligibility rules also apply).

The next stage of the process is for you to complete a series of online psychometric tests. Should you pass these tests, we will arrange a telephone interview with a member of our HR team.

If we like what we hear, you’ll then be invited to attend a two-day assessment centre in our Head Office, where we’ll assess your ability to rise above the rest.

The final stage of our application process is to meet with one of our Directors and take part in some final testing that will assess your fit for the company and the role.

Alright! Are you ready to start your Iceland journey?

About our Industrial Placement programmes

There's never been a better time to join Iceland on a 12-month Industrial Placement Programme as we were recently named Supermarket of the Year 2017 Grocer Gold Award, which is just one of a number of awards that highlight and celebrate our presence as one of the most innovative food retailers in the UK.

We’re changing the perceptions of UK shoppers on the nutritional value of food that’s been frozen at source. We call it the #PowerofFrozen and it has revitalised our industry and boosted Iceland’s profile higher than it’s ever been in our 47-year history.

We’re now searching for the best students to join us for a yearlong placement to spearhead a whole new generation of Iceland ideas, products, services and people in either Buying, Technical or within any of our General Business areas that could include Supply Chain, Finance, IT, Marketing or Operations.

We will mentor you throughout the year to support your development as well as giving you responsibility from day one to help make decisions that will shape the future of our business and allow you to put the theory you’ve learned at university into practice for the first time.

What Industrial Placement opportunities do we have?

Based on your degree and career aspirations we will ask you to choose which one area of the business you would like to join for your 12-month programme. Our opportunities are based in either Buying, Food Technical or General Business:

Buying

The yearlong placement programme in our Buying department is designed to give you an insight into the technical knowledge that you’ll require to become a superstar Buyer within the business. You will spend time with Buyers across a number of categories to build an understanding of the key principles of buying and gain market knowledge. Buying is the key to success in Iceland so you can expect challenges like no other, whether it’s assisting with supplier management, producing sales reports for categories and sharing in sales meetings or analysing sales profit and margin.

Food Technical

The Food Technical placement will involve spending a year within the Technical team working with all the product categories in Iceland. You will work with the Technical and Technologist team to give you an insight into the knowledge you’ll need to influence technical matters. You’ll build strong relationships with colleagues, suppliers, work cross-functionally and ensure a constant, shared commitment to food safety, legal compliance and quality. You’ll be able to work with suppliers to ensure that they deliver products that are right first time every time.

Business

You will spend a year working closely with senior leaders getting to grips with the way we do things here. You could be based within any of our teams, which means, you could find yourself working in Supply Chain, Finance, IT, Marketing or Operations. What’s more; there will also be a chance for you to take on a project where you can show us what you’re truly made of and develop your skills in project management, communication and working with different stakeholders.

What are the entry requirements?

We’re looking for the very best candidates out there – plain and simple. You’ll need to have between 250-300 UCAS points and you should be on track for a 1st class or 2:1 (or equivalent) in a relevant degree discipline. Your industrial placement must be recognised or supported by your university.

Join us and you’ll be part of the unique Iceland family culture. It’s friendly, informal and dynamic – a place where professionalism and having fun go hand-in-hand. That’s why we’ve twice been voted the UK’s Best Big Company to work for.

If you’re looking to power up your career, you need the Power of Frozen. You need Iceland.
